ASU Will Sell You Four Years of "How to Become an Influencer." That's Your Course With a Registrar Attached.
Arizona State's new content creation degree is 120 credit hours, accredited, and ends with a capstone where students must grow a real following.

Read this line and guess where it came from.
"The Bachelor of Arts program in content creation prepares you to become an influencer and strategic storyteller who thrives in the rapidly evolving creator economy."
That is not a landing page. That is Arizona State University's degree catalogue.
The 120-credit-hour Content Creation BA teaches video production, podcasting, personal branding, audience analytics and social media strategy, and was approved by the ASU University Senate in March 2026. It sits inside the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and appears in the university's 2026-2027 course catalog. Students get the Los Angeles Content Studio, brand content projects, media internships and content creation trips abroad. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
Then there's the capstone. For the final project, students pick a platform such as TikTok, build a content and growth strategy, and attempt to gain real followers over the semester.
"They will have demonstrable audience growth. They will have a platform of their choice with real content and real followers and a real audience behind them," senior associate dean Jessica Pucci told Arizona's Family.
A public university just built a graded growth guarantee. Most people selling audience-growth products would never put that in writing.
The pitch is word for word yours
Here is Pucci making the case for the program: "I don't know any content creator who wouldn't benefit from having world-class faculty whose sole mission is to help you and support your growth as a creator."
Strip the word "faculty" and that is every mastermind sales page written since 2019. Expert mentorship. Sole focus on your growth. Real results you can point to.
The demand signal underneath it is not in dispute. A 2023 Morning Consult poll found 57% of Gen Zers, ages 13 to 26, wanted to become an influencer if given the opportunity. ASU is simply the first major public university to route that ambition through a registrar.
What a university cannot do
Speed, for one. Senate approval landed in March 2026 and the degree showed up in the following academic year's catalog. By the time a syllabus clears governance, the platform it was written for has changed its recommendation system twice.
Proof, for another. ASU has not published a program-specific tuition rate for the degree, and the university notes the new program is not yet approved for use with GI Bill benefits. Meanwhile the thing that actually closes a sale in this market is a screenshot: this account, these dates, this number. A four-year degree cannot show you last Tuesday's dashboard.
That is the real competitive line. Accreditation answers "is this legitimate?" Buyers of creator education are mostly asking a different question: "did it work for someone like me, recently?"
Who actually gets squeezed
Not the low-ticket audience-growth product. Nobody choosing between a weekend workshop and 120 credit hours is comparing the same purchase.
The exposed tier is the one that sells credibility rather than tactics. Certification-style programs. Corporate and institutional training. Anything whose main value proposition is "this makes you look qualified." ASU can now issue a transcript for that, and it lists career paths including content strategist, social media manager, brand storyteller, podcast producer and digital marketer.
The quiet edit nobody noticed
One more detail worth your attention. One live version of ASU's degree page says the program prepares you "to become an influencer and strategic storyteller." Another version of the same program page drops the word entirely: it prepares you "to become a strategic storyteller."
Even the university is hedging on the word that made the headlines. Every course seller in this category knows that particular flinch intimately.
The students enrolled now will hit that capstone soon enough, and their follower counts will be public and countable. No university has ever had to pass that test before.
