Everyone Spent a Year Getting Ready for ChatGPT to Sell Their Course. The Checkout Button Is Gone.
OpenAI handed checkout back to merchants in March. Eight months later, the thing that actually sells your course is still your own sales page.

Somewhere on your hard drive there is a note from last year that says "prepare for agentic commerce." You can delete it.
In September 2025, OpenAI and Stripe launched Instant Checkout, letting shoppers buy from a merchant without leaving ChatGPT, alongside the Agentic Commerce Protocol. The pitch landed hard on knowledge sellers: get your product feed machine-readable, get listed, and the assistant would close the sale while you slept.
Then it ended. In its March 24, 2026 post, Powering product discovery in ChatGPT, OpenAI said the first version lacked the flexibility it wanted, and that it would let merchants use their own checkout experiences while it concentrated on discovery. Before that, a spokesperson had said Instant Checkout was "transitioning to apps."
The number nobody wants to say out loud
The launch came with access to over one million Shopify merchants. Very few actually went live — reports of how many merchants shipped Instant Checkout range from about a dozen to about 30.
That is the entire commercial history of the feature everyone panicked about.
Forrester's Jason Goldberg argued in Forbes that OpenAI's retreat tells us almost nothing about whether consumers want AI agents to help them buy things. Fair. But it tells course creators something else: the integration was never the asset.
What's actually live in October 2026
In-chat buying didn't disappear — it fragmented. As of 23 October 2026, four AI assistants can complete a purchase inside the conversation: Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Meta Muse and Perplexity. All of it still skews heavily American. Agentic commerce is mostly a US product in October 2026, though it is starting to spread.
And the plumbing underneath is retail plumbing. Discovery comes from feeds and readable product pages — Google Merchant Center, ChatGPT shopping feed channels and, for Shopify brands, Shopify Catalog through Agentic Storefronts. Shopify switched eligible US merchants' catalogues on in ChatGPT by default in March 2026, with purchases completing in the merchant's own store checkout.
McKinsey's October 28 read of the behavior is the useful part. AI platforms dominate discovery, but their lead disappears by checkout, where retailer assistants are used just as often. Survey data points the same way: Semrush found 22% bought inside an AI tool while 50% bought after researching in one.
Discovery strong. Direct purchase rare.
So fix the two things that matter
Be describable. An assistant can only recommend what it can parse. Structured metadata has become the new discovery surface. If your course page says "transform your life," you are invisible. If it says who it's for, what's included, how long it takes, what it costs, what the refund terms are, you're legible. Most course sales pages are written to seduce a warm follower, not to be read by a machine summarizing you to a stranger.
Survive a cold arrival. The buyer the assistant sends has never heard your voice, never seen your webinar, never sat on your email list. They land, with zero context, on a page built on the assumption that they already love you. The eleven-minute VSL isn't going to hold them.
The traffic source changed. The sale is still yours to lose.

Editor’s note: A year of 'AI agents will buy your course' advice turned out to be wrong, and the correction is more actionable than the panic was.
