Self-Paced Courses Finish at 10%. Cohorts Finish at 85% — And Charge Five Times More.

Ruzuku's 2026 data from 32,000+ courses puts a number on the cost of the evergreen dream, and Kajabi just built its pricing around it.

A dark home office at dawn with a monitor showing two course completion bars, one nearly empty and one nearly full, beside a circled calendar date.

The whole fantasy is that you build it once and never show up again.

Then you look at who actually finishes.

Ruzuku's 2026 analysis, drawn from its platform of 32,000+ courses, reports that cohort-based courses hit completion rates of 85–96%, compared to 10–20% for self-paced, and that cohort course medians run 3–5x higher than self-paced equivalents in the same niche.

Higher completion. Higher price. The format nobody in this industry says they want.

The trade-off is stated plainly

Ruzuku doesn't dress it up. Cohort courses require the instructor's time for each run. You can't sell them in your sleep. But the per-student value is dramatically higher. Many successful creators run three to four cohorts per year.

That's the arithmetic the evergreen pitch skips. A self-paced course sells while you're asleep and then sits in nine out of ten inboxes, unopened, generating no testimonial, no referral, no repeat purchase. Student outcomes are what drive the testimonials, referrals and repeat purchases that sustain a course business.

Read the platforms, not the gurus

Kajabi's 2026 feature set now includes cohort courses with deadlines, structure, and stronger completion rates, alongside AI drafting and a redesigned checkout.

More telling: the company gated it. Cohort Courses are only available with Growth and Pro Plans and are not available on legacy plans. Basic plan users can only run self-paced courses — one of the sharpest feature restrictions in Kajabi's plan lineup.

Platforms put their most valuable features behind their most expensive tiers. That's a revealed opinion about where the money is going.

Kajabi COO Mahesh Guruswamy wrote in February that the biggest shift in online education isn't AI, gamification or micro-learning — it's cohorts, with the most successful creators moving away from "buy and binge" self-paced courses.

Now the part that deserves scepticism

The 85–96% figure is the ceiling, not the average. Ruzuku's own platform-wide segmentation is far more modest: 64.2% for scheduled cohorts versus 48.2% for open-access, described as observational data, not a randomized controlled trial. A separate Ruzuku benchmark page puts it lower still, at 53.4% for scheduled cohorts versus 41.9% for open-access self-paced.

The company also flags the obvious confound: creators who build community into their courses may differ in other ways that affect completion — more engaged instructors, higher-touch formats, more motivated students.

So cohorts aren't magic. Something inside them is.

The cheapest version of the fix

Ruzuku's largest single lever isn't the cohort at all. It's people talking to each other: courses with active community discussion average 65.5% completion, versus 42.6% without. The platform calls it the single biggest lever found in fourteen years.

Which means you can keep most of the automation. Keep the evergreen funnel, keep the ads, keep the checkout running at 3am — then put a start date on the thing people bought, and a room where they can see each other.

One date. Five times the price.

Editor’s note: The audience's central fantasy is hands-off income. The completion data says the money is moving the other way — and we ran the sceptical version of the numbers too.
