The Newest Ad Platform on Earth Wants $300,000 Before It Will Talk to You
OpenAI's image ads go live inside ChatGPT this week at a reported $40 CPM and a $300,000 minimum. The useful part is buried underneath.

Three hundred thousand dollars. That is the reported price of admission to the newest premium ad placement in the world.
ChatGPT will run ads alongside AI-generated images this week, with brands facing minimum commitments of $300,000 and CPMs of $40, according to ad executives familiar with the pilot, as reported by Ad Age. The launch is part of a broader push into visual brand advertising, with additional formats being pitched to advertisers as agencies test where ChatGPT fits within their media plans.
For most people reading this, $300,000 is not a media test. It is the business.
There are now two ChatGPT ad platforms
This is the part that gets lost in the headline number, including ours.
The $300,000 ticket buys entry into a managed pilot for one specific new placement: the image slot that appears while ChatGPT is generating a picture for someone. The visual format shows images of product inspiration, a product in use or the experience a service offers, and OpenAI is testing it first while ChatGPT generates an image for a user, with the ad labelled and kept apart from the image being created. Testing begins later in October 2026 with an initial group of US advertisers before any broader rollout.
The rest of ChatGPT Ads has been open for months and costs almost nothing to enter. The $200,000 monthly minimum that gated the March 2026 pilot dropped to $50,000 in April and was removed entirely when ChatGPT Ads Manager opened to all US businesses on May 5, 2026. The floor now is a $25 daily budget, with OpenAI recommending a $3 to $5 starting bid per click and reported CPMs falling from $60 at launch to $15 to $45 in the open auction. There is no account-level minimum and no setup fee.
So the honest framing: the showroom costs $300,000. The side door costs twenty-five dollars a day.
What $300,000 actually buys
Run the arithmetic on the reported pilot pricing. At $40 CPM, a $300,000 commitment buys roughly 7.5 million impressions.
Now apply the only public click data anyone has. A Graphite report using Similarweb data found ChatGPT ad click-through rates of 0.6% to 0.75% in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia and New Zealand, compared with more than 1% in Brazil, Mexico, Japan and South Korea — though the report pools clicks across all advertisers, making the figures rough guides rather than direct comparisons.
At 0.7%, those 7.5 million impressions produce about 52,500 clicks. That works out to roughly $5.70 a click — expensive, but not insane for a cold audience.
The brutal part is downstream. If 2% of those clicks buy a course, that is about 1,050 students at a $286 acquisition cost. At 1%, you are paying $571 to acquire each one. Sell a $499 course on that math and you have run a very sophisticated charity.
That is why this placement is being sold to brands buying awareness, not to creators buying enrollments. Visual ads next to a generated image are a branding unit. Nobody is in a buying posture while they wait for an image of a birthday cake.
The plumbing is the actual story
Underneath the price tag, OpenAI spent October building the boring infrastructure that decides whether this channel ever becomes buyable at normal budgets.
On measurement, ChatGPT Ads supports a pixel and Conversions API for purchases, leads, installs and sign-ups; Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp can pass conversion data in from existing systems; AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin are the ten attribution partners; and Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL handle full-funnel measurement. Haus, Measured and WorkMagic are exploring geo-based incrementality experiments designed to determine whether ChatGPT Ads are causing additional conversions rather than simply receiving credit for them.
Look at what the pixel tracks. The ChatGPT Ads pixel tracks 10 events: Page viewed, Contents viewed, Items added, Checkout started, Order created, Lead created, Completed registration, Appointment scheduled, Subscription created, and Trial started.
Completed registration. Subscription created. Trial started. That is a webinar signup, a membership, a free trial. The event list was written with knowledge businesses in mind, even if the headline pricing wasn't.
Attribution got looser too. Ads Manager now offers 7-, 14- or 30-day click-through windows plus an optional one-day view-through window, reporting at campaign, ad group and ad level. View-through conversions began reporting in September 2026 on a fixed one-day window, but they are reporting only and do not yet feed bidding or optimization.
Translation for anyone selling a $997 course with a three-week consideration cycle: a 30-day click window is survivable. A one-day view window is not where your evergreen funnel lives.
Then came last week's housekeeping. On October 16 OpenAI rolled out expanded measurement partnerships, improved conversion reporting, weekly performance summaries and experiments with larger, more visual ad formats. The format tests include wider ad cards and larger images on desktop, and full-width images on mobile.
Nobody has proof yet
OpenAI has published one flattering data point. It says DV Rockerbox measured WeightWatchers' attributed CPA from ChatGPT Ads at 15.3% below its blended paid-search benchmark.
One brand. One partner. One metric.
Beyond that, the platform itself says it doesn't know. OpenAI's own help center says ChatGPT Ads does not yet have performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries or campaign types, which means any per-industry conversion table circulating online is a projection, not measured platform data.
It is also worth knowing exactly who sees these ads. Eligible users are limited to logged-in individuals aged 18 and older on the Free or ChatGPT Go tiers. Your highest-income prospects are disproportionately on paid plans — and invisible to this inventory.
Three things to watch
First, whether the $300,000 number holds. The last minimum went from $200,000 to $50,000 to zero in about ninety days. Premium pilots at this company have a short shelf life.
Second, whether view-through data starts feeding optimization instead of just reporting. That is the switch that turns a branding slot into a performance channel.
Third, whether the image placement ever clears on a CPC basis. The day you can buy it at a $3 to $5 starting bid instead of a $40 CPM is the day it becomes a creator channel. Until then, this is a story about what other people are paying to find out whether it works.
